Ch.7: When darkness prevails
Mainda soon got used to the life in the mansion. People came and went and she managed to get along with some of them. Tristy and the older male, Emil were really fond of her, as well as her trainer, Linda, who she spend a lot of time with. The master was sometimes in the house, speaking privately with some of them, but not her. She was still following around Tristy, doing minor missions, while training with Linda not only on how to use her brain to defend herself with walls, but also how to use her heightened speed and power to fight with the blood bound weapon she could create. A month went by and her fourth mission arrived. This time it wasn’t near a place of worship, or a heavily occupied location where grief, sadness and desperation gathered from a number of people. It was in the suburbs and the two women had to use a car to get there.
‘’It’s only two hours away.’’, Tristy commented, her eyes fixated on the road ahead. The sun had just begun setting, hiding behind the tall buildings. The black-haired woman had no idea that these people even had cars, even if it made sense. She was just getting with the flow for now, looking forward to taking up missions on her own in the future.
When they exited in the highway, Mainda felt excited. Even though it was for a mission, she barely traveled, even with her friends. In their memory her chest tightened. She felt sad for leaving them behind, but had ultimately taken her choice. She couldn’t pretend to be normal anymore and had found a new purpose in her life. When the car stopped and they walked out, Mainda couldn’t help but enjoy the peace of the suburbs. They had just arrived to a large cottage, a small farm with animals right next to it. The bright stars stood brightly over the female’s heads, as they approached the large wooden door of the house. Dim lights showed through the windows and a straight line of smoke rose from the chimney.
‘’How come we are fighting manifestations here?’’, Mainda couldn’t help but wonder upon noticing how secluded the location was. The next house was a few kilometers away and there was no way a large amount of people poured their dark emotions into this place. It was just a family house. The redhead pursed her lips in distaste and stopped right before she knocked on the door.
‘’Odd, right?’’, she commented herself and that only made the younger female more weary. It was the first time she saw Tristy slightly concerned with what they would be facing. Suddenly the redhead sighed, a cloud releasing from her breath against the cold weather and shrugged her shoulders.  ‘’Orders are orders and we have received ours. Master was really persistent about this one.’’, she added a detail the other woman was unaware of. The fact that Saika was persistent only shook Mainda more. Tristy straightened up and knocked on the door three times. The empty silence was followed by loud thuds of steps on the wooden flooring. The door opened up and the head of a woman peeked through.
‘’Can I help you?’’, her voice barely came out. All Mainda could see, was her flushed out face, the only emotion evident on it was worry. She seemed suspicious.
‘’Are you the owner of the house?’’, Tristy asked with a bright smile that could charm anyone. The woman nodded and opened the door more. She had her brown hair up in a messy bun, her chestnut eyes travelling worryingly between Mainda and Tristy. The black-haired female could now see the worn out state of her sweater and pants, but most importantly, smell an odd scent pouring from the house. Mainda couldn’t describe it properly, but it left a bad taste in her mouth. The suspicious owner nodded positively and Mainda nearly broke character when Tristy sighed in delight.
‘’Thank God! I thought we would have to keep walking!’’, she uttered and the foreign woman lifted her brows in surprise to the redhead’s odd behavior. ‘’You see we were supposed to go to a friend’s cottage but we no have signal out here and the Gps isn’t working. Could we call our friend from your phone, please!’’, she added and brought had hands together with a plea, acting as cute as possible, even if she had been talking to a woman.
The brunet seemed frustrated and remained in place, deep in thoughts. She nervously glanced over her shoulder to the interior of the house before stepping aside. The two females walked in the dimly lit house and Mainda took in her surroundings as the door closed behind them. The place was too quiet for comfort, as if no one had been living in there. The fireplace was well lit, the flames burning the woods up into crimson coals. In front of the fireplace was a set of couches, a TV to the side and behind them a small, but efficient kitchen, all cleaned up and shining, as if the place had no residents in it. Either the woman was a clean freak or something was off.
‘’The phone is right here!’’, the brunette hoarsely spoke up, her discomfort evident in her voice tone, and pointed to a small table next to the beginning of a dark hallway, leading further in the house, probably to the bedrooms. Tristy smiled brightly and approached the phone. She acted extremely well and Mainda aspired to be like her, since it proves to be a useful skill in missions. She picked up the phone and typed a number.
‘’Ah John!’’, she exclaimed. ‘’It’s me Jenny! Yeah we were coming your way but got lost…’’, the redhead kept pretending to talk to a man, explaining to him where they were at the moment. In the meanwhile, Mainda kept her eyes on the woman who paced nervously near the fireplace. She took one of the metal bars and poked the woods, forcing a few sparks to appear.
‘’Yeah we will wait here, Thank you!’’, Tristy finally uttered and hung up the phone. The hostess was visibly annoyed at the words she had heard. She definitely didn’t want any visitors and the black-haired female couldn’t really blame her.
‘’I am so sorry, could we hang out here for ten minutes until our friend comes?’’, the redhead spoke and brought her palms together in a plea. The brunet tsked and sighed in exasperation.
‘’You guys… You are here for my son, aren’t you?’’, she muttered under her breath, her chestnut eyes still fixated on the flames she kept probing with the metal bar. Mainda felt the uneasiness increase in the air around them and took a few steps back and closer to her partner. She glanced up at her and saw her expression changed, a frown clouded her lovely features.
‘’Is your son home miss Turner?’’, she suddenly asked and the woman chuckled and gave them a bitter smile.
‘’He is in his room.’’, she answered and stretched her body up. ‘’I won’t let you take him to an asylum.’’, she added and Mainda had to be reminded that regular people could not understand what manifestations were and couldn’t even see them. It struck her as odd that a single kid could be the source of a manifestation in need of their investigation.
‘’Do not fear miss Turner. We are trained phycologists. We will just have a talk with your son.’’, Tristy answered and smiled softly. The woman still glared at them suspiciously.
‘’I guess those idiots next door couldn’t keep their mouths shut and called on child services.’’, she muttered and shrugged. ‘’As long as you don’t take him away.’’
‘’I assure you…’’, Tristy began to speak again and the woman nodded and pointed to the inside of the dark hallway. As soon as Mainda followed the foreign woman and her partner in the hallway she felt the temperature drop drastically, as if they had stepped in a freezer. She could feel it, the manifestation.
‘’He is in there, let me wake him up for you.’’, the woman muttered and opened the door slowly, entering the room. Tristy and Mainda exchanged glances as the door shut behind them and the black-haired woman wondered if her partner felt the same way she felt.
Suddenly a yell was heard from behind the door and then a chocking sound. Both women’s eyes widened and Tristy immediately brought her palm near her mouth, biting into it and drawing blood. Mainda followed her lead and drew blood as well. They blades formed and Tristy nodded before kicking the door down and revealing the insides of the barely lit room.
Mainda felt a shiver run down her spine and all color flush from face upon witnessing the scene in the middle of the room. The mother was on the ground, dead, a huge wound had been carved over her throat. Above her corpse crouched the child, a teenager with blonde hair, dressed in a blood covered beige hoodie and sweatpants. His expression showed one thing only: insatiable hunger. He dug his nails in the woman’s throat and brought his face in the open wound, biting skin and flesh aggressively, his fair features stained crimson.
‘’Holy…’’, Mainda couldn’t help but utter in outmost disgust and the young man tuned to look at them. His black eyes were bloodshot and expressed insanity.
‘’Fuck, we have no choice…’’, Tristy commented and brought her blade up as the air grew even colder and a mass of black clouds emerged from the young man’s body. It covered him completely and manifested into a humanoid shadow his size, baring long sharp nails.
‘’What do you mean?’’, Mainda asked and jumped to the side the very last moment to avoid the first attack. The creature snarled and the surface of its skin turned solid, hiding the man behind and making the nails that much more threatening. It jumped again and the women avoided it, as the attack landed on the bed, slicing part of it in pieces.
‘’We must kill the person it is attached to!’’, Tristy yelled and charged to it, baring her long blade. She ducked to avoid its right hand and brought the blade up with impressive speed, cutting off the forearm. The body part fell down with a thud and the creature shrieked in horror. The dismembered limb lost the black coating the manifestation had given it and it was now just a detached body part of the young man.
Mainda didn’t like the idea of killing a person. She was glad to fight since she knew she was able to save others and harm nothing but the pure essence of evil. Yet it was only her fourth mission and she had to do the unthinkable.
‘’For fucks sake, attack Mainda!’’, Tristy yelled, while jumping sideways to avoid the other arm. She grit her teeth and shoved every other thought away. She had no idea what to do.
‘’Can’t we save him?’’, the black-haired woman asked and dashed near the creature to stop an attack aiming for the only opening the redhead had at the moment.
‘’No! He is too far gone.’’, the redhead spoke the words Mainda didn’t want to hear. She sighed.
‘’Lets attack from both sides!’’, she added and with a turn of her body found herself behind the creature. Mainda knew what she had to do. She ducked her head to avoid the sharp nails of the remaining arm and pointed her curvy crimson blade towards the ceiling. With a thrust, it pierced through the creature’s chin and skull, while another blade pierced through the throat, Tristy’s blade.
As the dark manifestation disappeared from the body, the negative aura leaving along with it, all that remained was the ravaged body of the young male. The women withdrew their weapons and the only thing in Mainda mind was if that had really been the only way.
