Ch6: First mission
Mainda had no idea
what she signed up for when she was set out on her first mission with another
one of the residents of the house, the redhead woman, Tristy. She was going to
be responsible of keeping her safe and show her through her first mission.
Mainda was more than concerned on how the situation was going to unfold. She
might have managed to repress her brain power, but she still could not fight
with it. Yet the trainer, Linda, insisted that if she was to stay in London and
actually complete the master’s bidding, she had to be exposed in the real world
as soon as possible. It would help the aggressiveness of her brain power built
up.
And there she was,
walking behind the redhead, admiring the way she proudly pranced through the
streets of night-time London, the cold making her breath visible around her
face. All the newcomer knew, was that she would have to fight for her life. The
redhead took a turn and they were now approaching a huge church, dim light
shining through its decorative windows. Mainda felt a chill run down her spine.
She wasn’t religious herself, but for some reason she dreaded entering the
temple. Tristy knocked on the iron door three times, the sound echoing through
the night. A few seconds went by and the door creeped open, the head of a bald
priest peeking through. Even under the dim light, the woman could see how old
he was.
‘’Priest John.
Good evening’’, the red-head spoke and smiled to him. The priest nodded and
after glancing at the black haired girl, narrowed his eyes.
‘’Has your master
started recruiting?’’, he asked hesitantly and the redhead scoffed.
‘’Our master’s
work is none of your business.’’, her words were ironic. ‘’May we enter?’’, she
added with a lift of her brow and John the priest pressed his lips in a thin
line, stepping back so that the women could enter.
The temple was
nearly empty, only a few priests walked around here and there. The scent of incense
was intense and Mainda barely held herself back from coughing profusely.
‘’We know the way,
John. We’ll be done in a few minutes. Make sure no one comes down.’’, Tristy
commented and walked through a back door, the black-haired woman following
closely behind, worried out of her mind. As they descended the stairs, Mainda
felt a tightening in her chest and an uneasy feeling she could not explain.
‘’You feel it,
right?’’, Tristy asked and stopped walking when they reached another iron door
at the end of the stairs, possibly leading to the basement. Mainda narrowed her
eyes and when the redhead turned to look at her with a smirk, nodded.
‘’Behind this door
lies the manifestation of the negativity in the area. It is usually collected
in temples of worship, since it is the place where people pour their hearts
out. It is our duty to destroy them. Being touched by death makes us the only
ones able to physically fight them.’’, she explained and Mainda widened her
eyes. Why did they wait for this moment to explain to her what the true purpose
of their existence was? Did master really want her to choose her life before
letting her know?
‘’But how do we
fight them?’’, She managed to say and Tristy chuckled.
‘’Our dear trainer
likes the shock tactic. She believes seeing one of us actually fight these
creatures and be exposed to them is a great way to jumpstart the aggressive
side of your brain power.’’, she added and when she saw the younger female
stand motionless, let out a sigh. ‘’Whenever you are ready…’’, she added and
Mainda braced herself and gave her another nod.
When they walked
through the door, though, all courage the newcomer had mastered, left her. In
the middle of the room was a wooden cross on top of a pedestal. Around the
object swarmed a dark mass, like a black cloud, with no shape or form. Is was
nearly as big as a person and the aura it emitted gnawed on the female’s bones.
‘’This
manifestation has built up over the last year and isn’t that aggressive. As
soon as they recognize us they take form.’’, Tristy commented and took a few
steps near the odd cloud.
‘’What happens if
it remains here?’’, the black-haired woman couldn’t help but ask, wearing a frown
that darkened her blue eyes. The red head sighed.
‘’It keeps
building up and eventually consumes the souls of the humans. They cannot see
it, but it affects their psyche.’’, she replied and Mainda lifted her brows in
surprise. ‘’What do you think happened during the Dark Ages?’’, the red head
scoffed and Mainda became progressively curious how all this tied with human
history.
‘’Keep your eyes
on me.’’
Mainda obeyed the
older female’s words and focused on her as she walked even closer to the cloud.
It somehow moved and stirred around, making noises similar to screams and
grunts, using a collection of voices. Tristy stretched out her hand and brought
it near her lips. Mainda widened her eyes when the redhead bit on the skin of
her palm, drawing blood from it.
‘’What the hell
are you…’’, the younger one exclaimed and Tristy ignored her, lowering her now
bleeding right arm next to her hips. Mainda gasped in surprise when she
witnessed a huge amount of blood run from her palm, but never falling on the
ground. The mass of fluid took shape and formed into a sharp, red colored
blade, similar to a katana.
‘’This is called
blood binding and is the aggressive expression of our brain power. It is the
only thing able to destroy manifestations.’’, the redhead explained as the dark
cloud took form in front of them, turning into a humanoid like creature. Dark
feathers, blood and other odd fluids fell from the creature, an ungodly smell
of death filled the room. The manifestation now stood more than two meters
tall, the empty hole, where the eyes should have been, cried a dark fluid and
the mouth remained agape, groaning in pain. It stretched out the limbs and a
bunch of black vines shot through, aiming for the woman.
Mainda felt her
heart jump when the vines came too close to them. She run to the back, but the
attack of the creature was stopped midway, the vines crashing on an invisible
wall, created by Tristy who had her left hand on the air as well.
‘’It is a weak
one. You should draw blood too.’’, the redhead spoke, not sparing a single
glance on the now shaking younger one.
‘’I can’t…’’,
Mainda mumbled, feeling her heartbeat near her throat. All color left her face
when the redhead turned to face her. An expression of disdain and anger colored
Tristy’ s elegant features, while the creature kept attacking the invisible
wall, the thuds echoing in Mainda’s ears.
‘’If you want to
honor your master… you must be able to fight the manifestations.’’, her every
word dripped with irony. The black-haired woman tightened her fists and even
though every cell of her body told her to flee, she stood there and brought her
right hand near her lips. She took a deep breath and bit on her skin
aggressively. The metallic taste of blood coated the tip of her tongue before
she brought her hand back down.
‘’Visualize the
weapon.’’, Tristy suggested and Mainda shut her eyes and focused. She could feel
the blood in her veins pulsate aggressively, the sting of pain making her wince
as the blood left her body. When she opened her eyes again, she was gripping on
a thick blade, nearly half a meter long. It was crooked and naturally had the
color of blood. The redhead smiled.
‘’Whenever you are
ready.’’, she announced and the younger one frowned in determination. She could
do this. She felt empowered. She had found another purpose in this life:
Ridding the world of its own darkness. It felt like a noble way of living the
life gifted to her.
Mainda nodded and
Tristy released the wall. The vines shot through, but both of the women managed
to avoid them, while Mainda run towards the creature, surprised by her own
speed. As soon as she approached it, the chill of its terrifying existence
gripping on her, she stuck her sword through the head. Time seemed to stop for
her when the creature stopped moving. Suddenly, a roar echoed through the room,
loud enough to make Mainda wince. She jumped back, pulling the sword out of the
head, forcing dark blood to splash everywhere. She watched over as the
manifestation disintegrated into dust.
‘’Your first
mission is now complete.’’, the redhead commented and gave Mainda a bright
smile.
