Ch.16: My shiny sword
On their way to London Issah engaged in minimum conversation, yet Mainda felt his piercing gaze drifting her way again and again. She couldn’t fathom his odd behavior and his sudden interest in her and tried to ignore his existence, knowing well that she had nothing to fear from him. Looking forward to seeing master Saika once more, the apostle spared no time at all and headed for his office as soon as she stepped foot in the residence. She knocked on the door and opened it up, knowing well that soon enough they would have to get upstairs for dinner. Saika glanced up from his paper work, his pitch black eyes focusing on her own blue ones and the female shivered. Her body relaxed in his presence, making her realize how much she missed him when she had to leave for missions.
‘’Master.’’, she uttered and bowed her head lightly. He got up from his seat and approached her. As soon as he stood in front of her, he gave her a long look, his eyes tracing her form from top to bottom.
‘’You were successful.’’, he spoke in his deep voice and the female nodded. She promptly described the trip and mission to him, as well as the way they had managed to defeat the manifestation, thanks to Tori’s ability. Saika shook his head and smirked lightly.
‘’I guess Ikrov and I were correct to pair you two together. You will certainly be cooperating in the future, as the future seems too dark.’’, he spoke as soon as the woman was finished, making her frown.
‘’What do you mean…’’, she began and he interrupted her.
‘’The fact that apostles keep appearing at the same moment manifestations of such extend do, means one thing only. War could shift the world’s balance once more.’’, he commented and his face darkened. Mainda recalled all her studies. In the past, before and during great wars, the amount of manifestations was ridiculously high and their power was tamed with the assistance of apostles and followers who kept appearing near masters again and again as more people died. The masters call it a great prophecy and there had already been five prophecies in the past. The masters’ existence was tied to the human’s fate and their ability to turn some of them into followers balanced the energy of the world.
‘’And so the wheel turns and turns and war shall plague us once more.’’, Saika spoke and his words made Mainda shiver. Their weight fell on her and made her realize her role once more.
‘’You will be travelling to Egypt for your next mission. Apostles must come together for this one as well.’’, he added and Mainda nodded positively. She was simply going to follow orders.
‘’Anything else before we join the rest for dinner?’’, he questioned her and all her previous thoughts emerged.
‘’I met my brother…’’, she muttered and smiled nonchalantly. Saika lifted his brows and nodded to himself.
‘’That is interesting indeed.’’, he commented and crossed his arms over his chest. ‘’But I believe you have a question for me.’’, he added as if he could read her mind. It wouldn’t surprise her if he had, even if he hadn’t touched her like other times in order to look into her memories.
‘’The way I feel for you master…’’, she began, feeling her heart race, even though he knew well what she was talking about. ‘’Is it the way other followers feel for you?’’ Saika smirked and his black eyes turned red at once. The more she stared at him, the more her desire, fear and worship for him resurfaced.
‘’Indeed they do, but not to the degree you, as an apostle and a female does. The lust you experience for me isn’t normal for followers. Even amongst apostles it happens if the person is actually attracted to the master.’’, he added and Mainda felt embarrassed. She averted her eyes and remained frozen in time, wanting to disappear after realizing that her lust for her master was her own doing and not caused by their connection.
‘’Apostles can feel intensely for each other as well, but only if they are compatible.’’, he spoke once more and this time Mainda stared right at him with wide eyes, recalling the emotions she had felt for the blonde male apostle. ‘’We call it apostle pairing and it is the best weapon we masters craft in times of urgency. It is the reason Ikrov and I decided to work together.’’
‘’What are you saying master?’’, she asked, not wanting to admit the route this conversation was taking. Saika sighed and touched her shoulders with his hands.
‘’If Ikrov’s apostle and you shared intense feelings when you worked together, your pairing was successful. You will be a team from now on.’’, he explained and Mainda’s mouth fell open. ‘’Yes he felt the same way you did. And it is both your duty to fight for this world.’’, he added, reading into her thoughts.
‘’But… I…’’, she mumbled still in disbelief.
‘’Let’s go, you are hungry.’’, her master told her and opened the door to show her out of his office.
The following day, Mainda enjoyed a training session with Linda, relieving her stress through their sparring. They both had their swords out, fighting as aggressively as possible, striving to heal all wounds they inflicted onto each other in the process.
‘’I hear you will be travelling in a few days again, this time on your own?’’, Linda spoke as they took a breather, chugging on water. Mainda nodded and recalled the details of the mission she had been given as soon as she woke up by her master. She was looking forward to the mission, mostly because she was going to be away from everyone, including Issah and because she was going to meet new people and another master. Mistress Onofria had her base in Cairo and her apostle close by, preparing her for the mission. This time three of them were going to cooperate and fight against a manifestation so big, that Onofria herself had to remain close by to it and contain it. Masters could contain the manifestation, but were unable to destroy them by their own hands, that was the use of their followers.
‘’I am flying tomorrow night.’’, the apostle commented and another detail occupied her thoughts. The third apostle of the team was going to be Tori. In his thought, the female felt a pang in her chest, especially after the conversation she had with her master the previous night. Linda eyed her and smiled with the edge of her lips.
‘’You seem troubled…’’, she commented and Mainda had to recompose herself and give the woman a smirk of pride.
‘’Nothing of concern.’’
Mainda had just packed her things and prepared to leave the residence to head for the airport, when a knock on the door made her exhale loudly and zip the small suitcase abruptly. When the door opened her brows lifted in surprise when she was met with the Issah’s, emerald eyes, carrying his regular bland gaze.
‘’Can I help you?’’, the female asked and crossed her arms in front of her chest, leaning against the doorframe. Memories of her previous interactions with the quirky male, kept her on edge, but she managed to keep her feelings hidden.
‘’You are going on your own.’’, he announced, as if Mainda didn’t know about it. She scoffed and waited for him to continue his words. He frowned and gave her a menacing gaze that did not faze her. This man had stopped looking frightening in her eyes.
‘’Make sure you get back in one piece.’’, he spoke firmly and took a step near her. Mainda’s arrogant look fell as the male towered over her, his face inches away from hers as his angered expression turned into a cunning one, a smirk decorating his thin lips.
‘’And if you dare make any new friends there, you will be punished.’’
His choice of words sent a shiver down her spine and it took her a second before she reminded herself that there was no reason to fear this man. She frowned.
‘’This is your last chance Issah. If you ever speak to me like that again, I’ll inform master Saika and then beat you to a pulp.’’, she growled through her teeth and the male widened his eyes in excitement.
‘’That is fine too.’’, he spoke under his breath, rosy cheeks were showing on his pale complexion, under the light of the hallway. ‘’Enjoy your mission…’’, he added and lowered his head beside her neck. Mainda was left paralyzed, as she heard him take a long sniff and exhaling with a moan. He took a step back and turned around, his indifferent expression and stance had taken over once more. The apostle needed a few minutes to get over what she had just experienced and even through her flight the memories remained strong, not giving her piece of mind.
