Ch.15: Disturbing masculinity
Tori naturally bounced back in a matter of a few hours, since the healing abilities of followers were superhuman. The mission was complete, but a number of questions tortured Mainda. She wanted to wait though, to discuss her worries with her master. The woman sighed and splashed some water on her face. When her blue eyes stared at her reflection she felt a shiver run down her spine, the grey eyes of the fellow apostle flashing in her memory. For a split second, all the feelings she had for her master, feelings she had been unable to control, where caused by Tori’s existence. She shook her head and wore a thick sweater over her torso, enjoying the warmth and comfort it brought. Issah and she were going to enjoy dinner with master Ikrov and the men who had worked with them, before leaving for London at dawn of the following day.
Before she even managed to walk out of the room, a knock was heard on the door. She opened it to see Issah standing there, his expression the same as always.
‘’Mainda.’’, he spoke in a soft low voice, which carried more emotion than his expression. He took two steps in the room, forcing her to step back, a frown already altering her expression. He felt somewhat menacing.
‘’Is there something wrong?’’, she asked.
‘’I wanted to apologize.’’, he began and Mainda lifted her brows.
“For what?’’
‘’If Tori hadn’t jumped in to save you, you would have been wounded.’’, he replied, bringing her discomfort.
‘’There is no reason to apologize though. We are responsible for ourselves.’’, she commented and then frowned. ‘’I should apologize to Tori, now that I think of it.’’, she added and pursed her lips. The male scoffed.
‘’I will never let that happen again. You won’t need anyone else working with you Mainda.’’, he suddenly announced and smirked slightly, one of the rare times his expression changed. ‘’Now that the master has finally given me the opportunity to work with you, I won’t ruin this.’’ His words felt more like a threat and a number of questions popped in her head.
‘’Why are you saying these things Issah?’’, she asked, fearing of what she was going to hear next.
‘’No reason…’’, he replied and his smile widened. Mainda shivered, witnessing an expression never seen before on his face. ‘’I just care for you.’’, he added and the air suddenly felt heavier.
‘’Hey.’’, a familiar voice was heard and her eyes darted at the door, where her brother stood, like an odd savior. His eyes traveled from one person to another and he frowned as if he had read the room. Issah took a step back and glared at Koro, disdain flashed on his face for a split second, before he turned indifferent once more.
‘’See you at dinner.’’, he mumbled and walked out.
The female exhaled loudly, as soon as he was gone from her sight. Her brother gave her a sideways glance and motioned her to follow him outside, a smile soon replacing the frown on his face.
‘’I am feeling kinda bad that we are going to separate again.’’, Koro commented and Mainda relaxed at once upon hearing her brother’s kind words. She definitely felt the same.
‘’Maybe our masters will let us meet often.’’, the female spoke up. ‘’I will definitely ask mine. I found my brother and I am not losing him again.’’, she added and smiled wide, seconds before they stepped into the dining room. The first thing her eyes met was the tall male apostle who she had pierced with her blade a few hours ago. Thanks to his master’s healing he looked as good as new and his bright smile made her mouth dry up.
‘’Ah, and here is the woman of the hour.’’, Ikrov’s deep voice was heard and Mainda focused on his crystal like, blue eyes. ‘’Congratulations on a successful mission. Your master will be proud for you.’’, he added and placed his strong hand on her shoulder. The woman forced a smile and nodded.
The table was soon filled with all kinds of foods and beverages to be shared between master Ikrov and the four people who took part in the mission. Mainda sat beside her brother, engaging in minor chit chat he initiated, regarding her past life, enjoying the calmness it offered. Issah sat further away, his eyes watching over them all, his expression indifferent. Mainda felt extremely uneasy after what had happened previously and even feared the male. She had to remind herself who she was and the fact that her master was much closer to her than the rest of the followers.
‘’It still sounds amazing to me that two siblings ended up becoming followers of different masters.’’, Tori suddenly commented and the female just brought her attention to him, focusing on his grey eyes. It seemed like he had been watching over them as well, observing their conversation. The woman smiled at him and shrugged her shoulders, unsure of how to react. She was shocked to see the male avert his eyes for a split second, as if embarrassed.
‘’Fate works in the strangest of ways.’’, master Ikrov commented and the rest of the dinner carried on casually.
Mainda returned to her room that night, looking forward to get some rest. She stepped back in surprise when a hand pressed over her door before she even opened it. Glancing to the side, she was surprised to see Issah. The male carried an infuriated expression, another uncommon thing for him that made her narrow her eyes, recalling his previous words.
‘’Don’t get too close to other men now Mainda, understood?’’, he purred at her, threateningly. ‘’The only one I will accept getting close to you is our master. You don’t need anyone else.’’, he added and the woman felt half scared, half angry. She hadn’t had the opportunity to ever train or brawl with him, but she has seen his abilities and her being an apostle now meant that she was stronger than him. She had no idea why he expressed such a behavior, especially considering how he hadn’t spoken to her all this time, but simply stood there, watching over.
‘’Cut it out.’’, she uttered, the confident part of herself taking over. ‘’You have no right to order me around Issah. Watch your words and actions and remember who I am.’’, she added and the male’s green eyes widened. He suddenly scoffed at her and proceeded to laugh, a very creepy laughter that made the woman shiver.
‘’I like that…’’, he murmured, taking her by surprise and brought his face too near to her. ‘’You are a tease after all.’’, he added and the woman gritted her teeth, infuriated, disgusted.
‘’Is he bothering you?’’, a voice was heard and the black-haired male tsked in annoyance and his expression turned vicious as his eyes glared at the person standing at the end of the hallway who happened to stumble across the scene. Mainda turned her gaze at Tori, who had his arms crossed over his chest, obvious annoyance altering his expression.
‘’Thank you Tori, I can handle it.’’, the woman spoke, frustrated with the situation. ‘’Go rest Issah. It’s an order.’’, she added and stared in her partner’s eyes. He frowned and with another scoff turned around to walk into his room. She planned on discussing the issue with master Saika. Mainda sighed and rubbed her temples with her fingers.
‘’Too much attention huh?’’, Tori spoke again and she just then realized that he had approached her. Her body turned numb for a split second, upon realizing the proximity of the male apostle. He smiled wholeheartedly at her and scratched the back of his head, avoiding her gaze.
‘’I hope we get to work together again.’’, he finally spoke and extended his hand for a handshake. Mainda blinked in surprise and looked up at the male’s face. His eyes were still averted and he glanced between his hand and the wall beside them, nervously. She shook his hand and laughed.
‘’Yeah, me too!’’
