Ch.8: Pair of green
‘’Mainda, can you help me here please?’’, Katherine called as she walked inside the kitchen and the black haired woman followed her to help her serve the plates on the table. She had been cooking for lunch and for the past two months of her stay in the London house she had been doing most of the cooking voluntarily, since she was the only trained chef. They were going to have dinner with the master that night and everyone was excited. Tristy, John and Issah were there, while the rest of the family was away on missions. As she walked back and forth from the kitchen, Issah run to her to help her. The woman focused on his fair complexion and his emerald eyes. A few strands of his long black hair draped in front of his face. He was a handsome man and was near Mainda’s age. He had been polite yet indifferent towards her, in contrast with John who was aggressively challenging everyone in the house, acting like a brat. The better Mainda became in fighting, the better she stood against the younger male, instead of simply ignoring him.
‘’Thank you…’’, Mainda uttered and the male glanced up at her, his face still unreadable. He rarely smiled and rarely spoke and was the only person in the house Mainda had no complete opinion on.
‘’Master!’’, John exclaimed, still playing with one of his butterfly knives, his favorite accessory, as soon as Saika entered the room. The elder male smiled gently and with every step he took in the room the air around him thickened. The black haired girl wondered if the rest of the family felt the same attraction and fear for the man as she did. She met his black eyes and nodded to him with a soft smile.
‘’Good evening.’’, he spoke in his deep voice, standing out from everyone in the room and sat at the head of the long table, at the side of the living room, where they all dined night after night. ‘’I see Emil and Linda are still out.’’, he commented as Katherine brought a huge plate of roasted vegetables and chicken to the center of the table.
‘’Yes, and Rena will return next week.’’, she added to his words and sat beside him, untying the bun she had her blonde hair in.  Her chestnut eyes focused on the rest of the members of this weird family, beckoning them to join the table. As everyone sat around, Mainda found herself preoccupied with her food, her mind drifting off to her previous missions and some readings she had been excited to do. She also thought what to cook for tomorrow. Considering that Emil was going to return, she wanted to cook something sophisticated and old fashioned for him. Discussions picked up around the table and when Mainda lifted her eyes to look up, she found Issah staring right into her.
Her heart skipped a beat, even if it wasn’t the first time she had caught him staring. His expression was completely bland, as if he was a statue. If it wasn’t for his bright green eyes, he would look frozen in time. She had always been wondering if others had the same interactions with him, since he acted the same way to everyone around him. Always coming and going in silence, barely talking. The most he spoke to was John, during arguments.
‘’Hey, curly!’’, John spoke up from the other side of the table, a playful smirk on his face, as he referred to Mainda. Her black curls really made her stand out in the family, since she was the only one carrying such wild hair. Yet she was proud of it and actually grew to not care about the nickname the brunette male had given her after the first week of constantly hearing it. Mainda lifted a brow in irony.
‘’What is it kid?’’, she asked back, feeling confident in herself. John chuckled.
‘’You have been spacing out more than usual, are you counting sheep already?’’, he kept on teasing and she rolled her eyes.
‘’Some of us like to eat in silence. You don’t have to speak every thought in your mind, John.’’, her comment made him scoff, but shut him up. Then Mainda blinked in surprise when she heard a chuckle from Issah’s side. When she glanced at him, he had been giving her a sideways glance, an ironic smile on his face.
‘’Mainda, it is time to take a mission on your own. Come to my office before bed time, please.’’, master Saika suddenly commented and the woman widened her eyes in surprise. She felt nervous, yet excited.
As she had been ordered, she visited the master’s office before turning in for bed time. She knocked on the door softly before coming in. Master Saika had been sitting nonchalantly on his office chair, looking over a few open letters, from a stack neatly placed at the corner of his desk. He gave her a single glance before returning to them.
‘’I am glad to see you that involved with our little family.’’, he commented and chuckled lightly. Mainda did not comment, but felt satisfied with the subliminal praise, even for such a small thing. He placed the papers down and crossed his fingers over them, his pitch black eyes focusing on her, giving her chills as usual.
‘’You seem tense, have you not had enough practice with Tristy?’’, the corner of his lips curled up in a smirk and she straightened up, letting the frown show on her face.
‘’I am ready to take on any mission you give me master.’’, she simply spoke, wanting to finally become independent. She may still be insecure, but she still wanted to act on her own. Master Saika nodded to himself.
‘’You may know that some missions are overseas, since I take over the larger part of Europe and parts of Africa. Other masters have taken over other parts of the world.’’, he began and Mainda nodded. It made sense when she found out that each part of the world was connected to different masters, each one with his or her own little army of followers and a way of handling things. The only rule was that the priority was to control the manifestations of this world. Maida was curious if they did it because they cared, or if they actually earned something from it. They obviously earned a lot of money from the governments, through shady interactions with specific people informed on the issue, but there had to be something more. These people could take over the world, should they wanted to, and some of them did take over their assigned locations, but on the down low. Owning large companies, basically ruling over people in their own way. Saika was a more discreet master, preferring to stay in his house in London, having the utmost minimum of followers, but still way more than the ones in this house. No one knew how many followers he actually had.
‘’This time you will leave the country. I need you to visit Estonia. My followers there are very busy at the moment and I want to send some backup.’’, he spoke again, pulling Mainda out of her thoughts. She blinked, twice, wondering why on earth was he sending her to a place already assigned to others. He handed her a closed file, probably her plane and hotel details, as well as map of the location she was supposed to check. She wanted to ask questions, but Saika was avoiding her gaze, busying himself with other matters in his hands.
‘’Be warned, as this is a grey area and you might meet followers from master Ikrov. I have good relations with him, so no need to worry too much.’’, master Saika suddenly commented and the woman felt even more nervous, yet excited for the mission. Yet she couldn’t help but wonder why he chose to send her, when there were so many other followers here, way more experienced and probably better than her. She hesitated for a moment, but decided to stand up and leave the room, leaving the questions in the back of her head. Master might even want to test her and she didn’t want to hear that from his lips, as it might put even more stress on her.
The black-haired woman walked back up to her room, occupied with her own thoughts, barely paying attention to her surroundings. She stopped her tracks when she noticed someone else in the hallway.
‘’All set up for your next mission?’’, Issah spoke, his expression unreadable as always. His pair of green eyes looked over her intensely. Maida felt discomfort yet again, well aware that she had put up with his odd behavior long enough for her own sanity.
‘’Yeah… Can I help you with something?’’, she cocked her head to the side and gave him a fake smile, impressed with her own self and the guts she managed to show to her surroundings, something that probably rubbed off on her from Tristy, but reshaped by her own awkward idiosyncrasy. The black-haired male widened his eyes a bit and took a few heavy steps near her, the sound of his boots, was the only sound heard and Mainda felt her heart skip a beat when he lowered himself above her, bringing his fair face too close to her tanned one. Mainda blinked a couple times and her ironic expression fell from her face, leaving only an aggressive blush, her mind screaming with questions.
‘’Make sure you come back.’’, he spoke, the aroma of minty toothpaste hit the woman’s nostrils.
‘’Huh?’’, was all she managed, having decreased to a dumb idiot from the apprehensive actions of the male. He chuckled and broke a smile, a rare sight. His green eyes glimmered.
‘’Goodnight… Mainda.’’, he spoke, before turning his back and entering his room. The female stood there for a couple more minutes thinking on what had just happened, her upcoming mission suddenly had left her mind. She had to ask Tristy, the only person she felt comfortable to speak to, about this man. Even if he had been nothing but helpful, she couldn’t shake the uneasiness, the subliminal terror his aura caused. She had to find out what his deal was to be able to handle him.
