Ch.10: A major outburst
Mainda approached the manifestation once more, gripping on the hilt of her crimson sword, ready to fight. She paused when the scene unfolded in front of her. The two males with the crimson armor, run around the manifestation that had doubled in size and taken over the entire clearing. The part of their armor protecting their forearms had changed shape and now had two sharp blades protruding from the back of the entire length. As they run around the black mass, they cut soft and hardened parts of it, avoiding thorns and roots it produced to protect itself.
Mainda was left dumbfounded at the speed and agility of master Ikrov’s followers and admired the odd technique of the armor, wondering how they actually did it. Yet the problem still remained. The manifestation kept increasing in size and the female gritted her teeth, wondering what she could possibly do to help the situation. She was obviously not as skilled as the males and even they had a hard time. The tall one landed in front of her and lifted his elbows to stop the attack of a black root coming to him.
‘’You couldn’t help yourself huh?’’, he commented with his back at her and she run up to attack another root coming to his side, before the hit landed.
‘’You do seem to have trouble yourself.’’, she replied with fake confidence, still shaken to her very core, wondering how they would be able to defeat this huge manifestation that kept increasing in size.
‘’How on earth did this happen in a small island?’’, she added under her breath, before jumping to the side to avoid a sharp thorn, proceeding to slice it off, before the creature withdrew the mass it used to attack. The male scoffed.
‘’I guess this is the reason three people were sent here.’’, he added and run up to the mass again, trying to repeat the previous attack and assist his partner. Mainda joined in, even with her subpar speed and skill, still managing well for herself. Yet the manifestation kept growing. The female grunted in disbelief, in the verge of panicking. She sliced once more around the base and her eyes widened.
What she saw inside the mass, before it closed up again, took her by surprise. Another humanoid like shape was hidden in there and a thought came to mind. Maybe that was the actual source of power they had to destroy and it hadn’t spread all over the manifestation’s size. She attacked once more with all her might and noticed it again before the surface closed. Mainda looked around to locate the two males, noticing their own struggle against the creature. She gritted her teeth and decided that if she was going to be useful to her master she had to take risks as well. With every mission she completed, she managed to realize that very fact and built herself up for anything. It was a side of her she never expected to experience.
The female gave another swing of her crooked, crimson sword and took a sharp breath before entering the liquid mass of the manifestation, darkness surrounding her. All noises, all senses turned numb and she struggled to breathe and see, while she walked through a thick, black mist, the only light she saw was a purple like dim shadow of the actual manifestation. It was in the shape of a human, the limbs pressed against the body and the legs rooted in the ground, as if it was trapped. The woman felt progressively weaker with every step she took and it felt like days went by until she reached the core of the manifestation. She gritted her teeth and with a throaty scream, managed to move her arm, barely, since it was weighed down by the mass around her and pierced the head of the figure.
Just then, it felt as if time had stopped. Mainda couldn’t draw another breath and weakness overwhelmed her. Her eyes closed as she lost her senses, the last thing she saw was the dimly lit figure struggle and the mass around it disperse, crumble and turn to dust.
‘’What should we do with her?’’, a somewhat familiar, male voice, woke Mainda up. She was able to hear but struggled to move and open her eyes. Exhaustion was all that coursed through her body.
‘’She did destroy what we couldn’t.’’, another one sounded and she widened her eyes, as if her strength shot back into her, like an adrenaline rush. She sat up and glanced around hungrily to see the manifestation gone, the only thing in the clearing apart from her, were the two masked followers.
‘’What the hell…’’, she muttered and rubbed her head, trying to get rid of the dizziness that overwhelmed her with the sudden movement. A chuckle made her look up to meet the pair of grey eyes of the Viking like male.
‘’Well done follower of master Saika. It seems your master was right to send you here.’’, he commented and Mainda tried to stand up, nearly losing her balance, as her legs trembled. She felt a strong arm hold on her elbow, keeping her steady and making her glance up at the pair of blue, unreadable eyes behind the mask. She couldn’t help but wonder who that man was.
‘’Tori, take her to her hotel.’’, the blue eyed male, who had the same name as her late brother told his partner and Mainda heard him groan behind the mask.
‘’Why do I have to?’’
‘’Just do it, I’ll explain.’’, the other man pressed on and Mainda frowned.
‘’I can go back myself.’’, the female commented and pulled her arm from the male’s grip. She was just now proudly realizing that her idea had worked and she had managed to destroy the manifestation on her own. That only increased her confidence and she tried to imitate the proud stance Tristy had, looking down at the males, as much as possible, since they were a few centimeters taller.
‘’Goodbye.’’, she managed and turned around, trying to walk at her best ability, back to the hotel.
