Ch.17: A mistress of old
Cairo was a hectic city. The never ending traffic, the dust and constant honking, the people always on the move, made it a loud and lively place. Mainda liked this city and even thought the dust made her feel uncomfortable, she enjoyed the sun that beamed down on the tall buildings and between the streets, burning gently on her tanned skin. She had just arrived in Tahrir square, her driver dropped her off. She wanted to walk around the center a bit, before heading for her mission. The place was packed with locals and tourists, all of them heading for the various shops, to get a late lunch, or walking down the docks for a ride on the ferries of the Nile.
Mainda had to use the map on her phone to get to the tower of Cairo, where she was going to meet the mistress and the two apostles she was going to work with. It took her some time to get through the doors, because of the tourists lining outside the building. When she approached one of the guards, trying to explain in plain English that she was a guest of Miss Onofria Nirun, showing a special identification her master had given her, she was led inside and up the elevator. After reaching the final floor, she followed the guard through a number of tourists occupying the main hall, taking pictures and conversing loudly, to the back of the room. The man who had led her there, opened the door and pointed inside, where a well-lit hallway began. Mainda took a deep breath and walked in.
As soon as the door shut behind her, the noise muffled out. The hallway was narrow and had black walls, and red carpeting. The apostle paced to the front and with every step she took, nervousness overwhelmed her. The hallway took a turn and she ended up in a room, a casual conversation in Arabic was taking place in it. The first thing Mainda saw was the stunning view of Cairo from the large windows. The room was a luxurious office with grey carpeting, glass office desks with all the technological equipment and leather couches around a low glass table.
‘’Ah there she is!’’, a female voice made her look at the two women to her left, one of them seated behind the desk and the other in the front, standing. The woman behind the desk was in her mid-forties, with stunning facial features and a caramel like tanned skin. Her brown hair were tied up in a bun and decorated by golden jewelry. When Mainda’s blue eyes met her chocolate ones, she realized immediately that she was mistress Onofria. She gave her a gentle smile and the apostle mimicked her.
‘’This is Mainda right?’’, the woman standing sounded, forcing Mainda to look at her. She was a woman older than her, in her mid-thirties with black hair, cut short, barely reaching her earlobes. Her black eyes focused on her, a tense expression on her face. Both the women were dressed in formal clothing, making Mainda feel underdressed.
‘’Yes, pleasure to meet you.’’, the apostle nodded and gave them a smile. The woman behind the desk stood up and approached Mainda with the smile still on her lips.
‘’Welcome my dear.’’, her voice sounded soft, but powerful. It made her feel safe. ‘’I am Onofria and this is my apostle Nur.’’, she added and stretched her hand to the woman behind her. The woman called Nur, nodded to Mainda, a strict expression still decorating her face.
‘’About time you arrived.’’, a male voice sounded behind her, and the woman turned around to meet Tori’s grey eyes. Feelings of longing coursed through her and she tried to suppress them. The male wore a smile on his face, accentuating his handsome features.
‘’We are in great fortune for having three apostles join forces, ready to fight for the balance of the world.’’, mistress Onofria spoke and everyone focused on her as she sat back on her seat. The three apostles approached her as she crossed her fingers over the surface of her desk, her kind expression darkening.
‘’This manifestation has never been defeated in the past two decades. My followers keep chipping away its power, but never completely destroying it.’’, Mainda was more than concerned about that detail she had not been aware of. If Onofria couldn’t get her followers to destroy the manifestation in the past two decades, what could they possibly do any different. The mistress sighed.
‘’It is the reason I keep living in Cairo, even though I rule over most of Africa.’’, she added and her eyes focused on the apostles, travelling from one to another. ‘’The manifestation is hidden within the pyramid of Cheops. The mission will take place at dawn and a driver will take you there. I’ll leave the rest to you.’’, were her final words, before they were shown to the back of the room, where a hallway led to an entire apartment, something Mainda did not expect. As she settled in the small guest room, captivated by the view of the setting sun, shown from the window beside the bed, the orders her master had given her resurfaced. The mission goal was simple: destroy the manifestation at all costs, by cooperating with Ikrov’s apostle. She felt the need to speak with Tori, question whether he had similar orders or not.
The female apostle fumbled with her fingers for more than half an hour, contemplating whether she should visit the male apostle before dinner time, or not. She tightened her fists and took her decision. She turned around and approached a mirror, fixing her black curls around her head. Her blue eyes stared back at her and she sighed in exasperation, knowing well how dull she looked, no make up on, no interesting clothing, just her, the way she had always been. Still, she had enough confidence, convinced that it was the way she wanted to present herself.
When she went to open the door, though, determined to speak to the male, she felt her breath trapped in her throat. Tori stood there, wearing the same surprised expression as her, his hand already lifted, ready to knock on the door. He smiled awkwardly.
‘’H..Hey…’’, he stammered, making the woman force an awkward smile as well. Her brain blacked out.
‘’Did you need something?’’, she managed and the much taller apostle nodded.
‘’I wanted to talk.’’, was his answer and Mainda took a step back to let him in the room. She shut the door, feeling progressively nervous. When she faced him again, Tori’s expression was oddly serious.
‘’I wanted to confirm the plan with you.’’, he began. ‘’We might have to repeat what we did before and I want you to be ready for it. You must not hesitate to attack me. If the other apostle does it, it won’t work and the manifestation will destroy me and be free again.’’, he added and Mainda frowned, trying to convince herself that the plan was going to succeed, if they had to use it. She nodded and the male broke in a nervous chuckle.
‘’It feels so odd to hear my master talk about pairing and stuff…’’, with every word he spoke, his fair complexion took shades of pink and the female understood what was in his mind now, as she recalled her master’s words.
‘’I had a similar discussion as well.’’, Mainda spoke and lowered her gaze. When she brought her eyes back up, she felt her heart skip a beat. Tori was standing inches away from her, his grey eyes, meeting her blue ones in an intense gaze.
‘’I hope this is ok with you…’’, he spoke softly and she didn’t move as he lowered to her and kissed her on the lips, making her shut her eyes. Bolts of electricity shot through her body and she felt nothing but pleasure and longing for the person in front of her. She didn’t know him well, but the feelings couldn’t be controlled. Mainda kissed back and for a few minutes’ time their tongues battled and they hands roamed on each other’s bodies. When they stopped to catch their breath, Tori was frowning, concerned, his cheeks flushed red. Mainda had no idea what to do.
‘’We should get going…’’, she mumbled and averted her eyes from his in embarrassment. She heard a chuckle and glared at him to see a gentle smile on his face.
‘’Sure.’’
