Ch3: Welcome to the family
The black-haired woman opened her blue eyes hungrily. She sat up, finding herself on a single bed in a foreign space. Mainda was dressed in soft pants and a sweater and felt clean, refreshed and oddly energetic. She held her head when her most recent memories flooded her thoughts. Her fate in the hospital, Saika and his ridiculous words, a deal, her death. Her heart beat fast in her chest and she tried to stand up. She felt as good as new and wondered if it was all a dream. Her eyes took in the unknown location. The room had a door to a bathroom, a closet, a desk and bookcase. A window with closed blinds was right above the desk. She walked near the other door, which stood out from the blue walls and opened it up to look outside, only to see a narrow hallway. The dim lights from the ceiling made her feel as if she had just entered a horror movie.
Mainda stepped out, the sound of her pulse throbbing in her ears. The hallway had even more doors, just like the one she walked out from and to her right she noticed that it led to a larger room. She paced reluctantly, feeling very much on edge, as if she could be attacked at any given moment. She ended up in a large living room, decorated with black and red couches, a low table in between them and a fireplace in the corner. A lovely chandelier hang above and from a large balcony door entered day light, partially dimmed by the white curtains. The place felt warm and was decorated beautifully. Mainda was in someone’s home and she had no idea whose it was.
‘’Ah!’’, she heard an exhale from behind her back and jumped in place before turning around in pure terror, only to face a man standing at the beginning of the hallway. He was way over his fifties, a black top hat over his gray hair and a well-trimmed mustache above his thin lips. He wore a nicely tailored grey suit with a black scarf and round glasses. His chestnut eyes met hers and he smiled softly. ‘’Our new addition! Master mentioned that a lovely lady has joined the family!’’, he added and the woman stood there, dumbfounded, trying her best to take in the information.
‘’Master? Family?’’, she managed to utter and brought her hands together, playing with her fingers nervously. The elder male chuckled and stretched his arm towards the couches.
‘’Have a seat my dear. Let’s have some tea and I shall explain everything. ‘’, he recommended and Mainda nodded hesitantly. She sat on one of the couches, near the fireplace, while the man turned to the right of the room. She could clearly see a kitchen behind that open door. The woman focused her eyes at the opening that revealed the kitchen, watching over the elder man’s every move.
A few moments later he came out with a tray, two cups and a teapot, as well as some cakes and cookies were positioned neatly on it. He left the tray on the table and placed its contents on it. He served tea for both of them and took one porcelain, white cup in his hand before leaning back and crossing his legs. Mainda took the other cup and enjoyed the warmth it offered.
‘’I believe you made a deal with our master.’’, he began speaking in his gruff, heavy voice. The woman felt a chill travel down her spine, memories of Saika’s eyes flashed in her head.
‘’This man…’’, she murmured and her eyes narrowed. ‘’Who is he really?’’ she added and then suddenly recalled something else. ‘’And you… Who are you?’’ The elder male chuckled and brought his glasses up his nose before answering.
‘’My name is Emil Turner and I have been serving our master since I was a young teenager. Master saved me, just like he saved you.’’, he began explaining and Mainda remained silent, eager to hear more.
‘’This estate is provided to us by our Master, since we cannot return to our previous lives. He kills us and gives us a new life to take advantage of.’’, he added and Mainda knew it was coming. There was no way the hospital was going to accept that she had regained her mobility overnight through some miracle. She still wanted to contact her friends in some way, they were all she had in her life before the accident. Yet her mind focused on other things at that point.
‘’We?’’
‘’Ah yes. There are eight of us currently in the residence, under Master Saika’s guidance. You will meet them all eventually.’’, he answered and the woman was shocked to hear such a small number. Why would a man like that, with the ability of an actual God, rescue someone like her?
‘’You have a lot of questions I am sure, but have you accepted the reality of things? I for once, upon waking up, thought I had entered some fairy tale.’’, Emil commented and Mainda smiled bitterly.
‘’Yeah its tough to believe…’’, she mumbled, more issues rising in her head. Where were the rest of them? What was their purpose? What did they have to do for Saika to pay him back?
The elder male clapped his hands and stood up, leaving his cup on the table.
‘’I must run an errand for our dear master.’’, he suddenly said and smiled. ‘’You enjoy these treats and tonight the master will see you and explain further. I hope you enjoy your time in our little family.’’ He smiled wide and turned his back to leave.
Mainda was left there, alone, the fire crackling was all that was heard in the room. She looked around hesitantly, wondering what was in the rest of the house and where the other residents were exactly. Suddenly the sound of steps approaching echoed from the end of the hallway, partially muted from the closed door. Then the door at the end of the hallway opened up and Mainda could clearly see a shadow approach, the sound of heels against marble flooring was only getting louder.
‘’Well well well….’’, a female voice echoed through the walls and the woman tensed up as the source of it came to the light. ‘’A new sister in the family.’’, the strange woman commented and walked closer, sitting on the couch, beside Mainda, her legs crossing. The black haired female stared at her, unsure of what to say. The strange woman had a full head of short red locks and bright green eyes. She was very slim and elegant, dressed in a blue button up shirt and pencil skirt, a pair of blue heels on her feet. She wore make up, her lips colored in a bright red. Her expression showed that she was having fun. Before Mainda went to introduce herself, another sound was heard and a different person appeared in the room, running aggressively through the hallway.
‘’Where the fuck did you put my silver blades, Tristy?’’, a male yelled at the redhead woman with an infuriated expression. The woman, who was obviously called Tristy, shrugged her shoulders playfully and leaned near Mainda, making her lean back in discomfort.
‘’Such a whiny bitch, isn’t he?’’, she mumbled in her ear and the black-haired woman blinked in confusion, focusing on the man.
He was young, as if he had just entered his twenties. He had an undercut on his straight brown hair. He was thin and not too tall. His yelling came to a stop, as soon as he noticed the new family member.
‘’Who the hell is this broad?’’, he asked and pursed his lips in disgust. Mainda rose her eyebrows, feeling personally offended.
‘’My name is Mainda and I am new here.’’, she spoke, biting her tongue in her effort to not curse back.
‘’Pft, we don’t need any more weaklings here… This house is filled with stupid bitches…’’, he mumbled and Mainda tightened her fists, the redhead was laughing in amusement. It was probably a usual thing for her to hear such words from him. Yet Mainda would have none of it.
‘’You can call everyone else anyway you like, but you will treat me with fucking respect!’’, she spoke up and stood from her seat, her brows furrowed, her adrenaline rising. The young male gaped at her for a mere second and silence followed.
Suddenly his face broke in a twisted smile that made Mainda shiver. He threw his head back and laughed for more than a few seconds. Then the woman felt her stomach drop. In the blink of an eye, the male had taken a short blade from the inside of his brown leather jacket and thrown it between her feet. He glared at her shocked expression sideways and licked his lips.
‘’I like a little pushback.’’, he spoke below his breath and the woman couldn’t help but panic in her head, wondering what she got herself into.
‘’Have you forgotten your manners John?’’, another voice was heard out of the blue, this time very familiar to Mainda. She turned her head to face the owner of the voice, who seemed to have appeared out of thin air and her chest tightened.
‘’M…m…master.’’, the male stammered and stood straight, the redhead following as well, in the sight of Saika. He was dressed in black, casual pants and elegant sweater, an indifferent, yet serene expression on his face.
‘’Mainda. We must talk.’’, he spoke and the woman felt drawn by his words, as if he could order her very soul to do anything. She hated it, but couldn’t resist it. She followed him back in the hallway and through the door to the back, questions popping up in her head.
