Chapter 1: The new recruit
Walking down the streets of Montreal in the middle of the night had never been Till’s favorite thing, but it failed to scare him as well. This time though, he walked with a purpose. Till had a mission to accomplice, one of the many he had taken over the past six years. The town was as busy as the male agent liked it for missions: barely any people walking around, most of them drunks, or workers taking night shifts. With his hands stuffed in the pockets of his jeans, he kept marching down the street, leaving behind clouds of his breath in the cold night. The name of the bar the target liked to regulate repeated in his head as he took a turn to a smaller street, his chestnut eyes landing on the neon sign that spelled ‘’Rooster’’. The male unbuttoned his black leather jacket and reached inside one of the pockets, retrieving a vial smaller than his index finger. He opened it up and downed the ruby liquid it contained, the taste coating his tongue pleasantly. A surge of power coursed through his veins immediately, an instant high he couldn’t help but love, it was in his nature after all, for Till was no human, but a demon. He fixed his messy brown hair and stepped forward.
‘’Can I help you sir?’’, he heard as soon as he stepped into the stuffy bar, the smoke in the air forcing him to narrow his eyes and wiggle his nose, the scent of weed was too evident. The bar’s security guard had stepped from behind the door and near him. Till turned to face him with an indifferent expression, suppressing his demonic powers that threatened to slip out.
‘’I came here to drink, I thought this was a bar?’’, he raised a brow at the taller male with the square jawline. He faintly nodded and took a few steps back. Till turned to face the inside of the extremely small shop, taking in the round tables positioned to the right, the ones it the corner that couches next to them and the bar to the left, behind which a male bartender prepared orders lazily. A single server, a young woman with fiery red hair and skimpy clothing, run around the place with grace and speed, serving the few customers who hadn’t yet passed out on their seats. His eyes scanned the customers and upon failing to locate his target, he walked to the bar, taking a seat in the middle.
‘’What can I get ya?’’, the bald bartender asked indifferently.
‘’Beer.’’, Till murmured and placed the money for the beverage on top of the counter. The male behind the bar took it and opened a fresh, cold, beer bottle in front of him. Till took a few sips despite himself, he liked alcohol, but not when he was high from the essence he had consumed earlier. At this point he only wanted human flesh.
Suddenly, he noticed a big order being placed on the round tray, the waitress struggling to get it through the only unlabeled door to his right. His next move became clear now, as he stood up, the blood pumping through his body aggressively, and took decisive steps towards the door, following the waitress in a narrow hallway. The guard had no time to react, since Till managed to get through with ease, running past the woman and to the end of the hallway where a dim light shone.
The moment Till stepped into the room he had to duck to avoid a bullet heading for him. His senses were heightened and his hunger for flesh took over, giving him access to his demonic abilities. He smelled three males in the room, before his crimson turning eyes even landed on them, their scent mixed with tobacco, sweat and alcohol. When he saw the face of his target he felt accompliced, before he even managed to land a hit on him. It did not mattered who the other two were, but they would fall from his blades as well. The moment his hands circled around the two daggers hidden in his jacket, he dashed against the men. He kicked one’s gun out of his hand, shoving the blade through his skull, right between his eyes.
‘’Who is this fucker?’’, Till’s target yelled and shot against him, the bullet barely missing him, as the demon now focused on him. In a split second the blade had gone through his jaw and up his head and Till used him as a shield against the bullets the third one shot. As soon as he caught up with him, he threw the dead body on him before shoving a dagger into his skull.
The demon agent stood between the bodies, making sure he had gotten the right person. His eyes glanced up at the shocked waitress whose mouth gaped in pure horror. With a shriek, she run out the room and it was Till’s signal to take his leave as well. He looked around furiously and noticed a smaller back door, realizing it was his best option. In a matter of seconds, the male walked in the streets of Montreal again, heading back to his home.
As soon as he stepped into the tenth floor apartment he had been living in for the past six years, he was greeted by the ever constant silence. He approached the small kitchen beside the living room and downed a glass of water hungrily, nearly choking on the last gulp, when he sensed a familiar presence just outside the large window of his balcony. Till walked out, receiving the cold wind with pleasure, and his, still crimson, eyes faced another pair similar to his.
‘’Good job tonight, as always.’’, the taller and elder male spoke with a sly smirk playing on his face. Till lifted both brows and chuckled.
‘’You haven’t visited to congratulate me for years. What is going on?’’
The elder male, called Gerald, tilted his head to the back and barked a laughter that shook his Adam’s apple. He run a hand through his blonde hair and climbed down the balcony rails, taking his position beside the younger demon.
‘’Truth is I need you to do some recruiting for me this time.’’, he spoke and the brunet stood there in shock, since he had never received such an order from this man, his boss.
‘’Why me?’’, he blurted out, getting more than suspicious. The blonde one shrugged.
‘’I looked at your files and it is a person from your past.’’
His answer forced a shiver down Till’s spine. Knowing damn well that he discovered his demonic powers after a near death experience, he couldn’t help but worry about who could that person be. He still kept in touch with family and a few friends, pretending to work a different job abroad. Gerald chuckled, forcing the younger male to give him a hesitant glare.
‘’You seem very concerned.’’, he pointed out, ‘’But worry not, it is not a member of your family. You merely used to live in the same neighborhood. She was probably your classmate at some point.’’
‘’Do you expect me to fly back to Italy to recruit this person for you? How important could they be?’’, Till complained with a frown. ‘’They have agencies there as well, don’t they?’’
‘’Ah ah ah…’’, the blonde demon moved his finger with every vowel. ‘’You are rushing as always. This woman is in fact living in Montreal and yes she is important. Her powers awakened three months ago and she is completely out of control.’’ Till’s eyes narrowed at his words.
‘’Her name is Mia Conti and the government has requested immediate recruitment or execution. I had to step in, you see.’’, Gerald added and the younger demon felt his stomach drop at the sound of the name. He immediately reached for his cellphone, searching through his messenger application for the last time he spoke with this woman. Their most recent conversation was about a week back and they had been discussing about exercise. He exhaled and his eyes focused on the road below, the silence of the night accentuating his feelings and thoughts.
‘’We were not classmates, we just met in the kickboxing club of the area.‘’, Till explained. ‘’So you want me to locate and recruit her… You know I have conflicting feelings about this.’’
‘’Either we take her in or someone else does. If she resists we have to kill her. She has been devouring people left and right.’’, Gerald explained and Till shivered, the thought of this woman being a monster felt wrong in his mind. She had always been sweet, caring and even confident and aggressive at times, but only with fairness in mind.
‘’Very well, point the way.’’

Till had been standing on the balcony of an abandoned house for nearly an hour. Gerald had informed him about the areas Mia liked to go hunting for her meals and one of them was a bar, serving as a place for whores to shop customers. The thought of her being a regular in these places disgusted him and made him reconsider all the things he had shared with her in the past. His eyes narrowed when he finally noticed someone coming out of the bar, two people, a male and a female, dressed in a really short, for winter time, dress. He couldn’t tell who she was from up high, so he carefully and silently climbed a few balconies down, trying not to wake the people living in the apartments.
As soon as he reached the balcony of the first floor, he lowered near the ground, his eyes widened, staring between the bars. The woman led the male into the small alley with a dead end, coaxing him with her other hand and trailing her exposed skin. Till could clearly see his friend Mia, but he barely recognized her by her actions. A lump formed in his throat when the male pushed her against the wall and went in to kiss her, his hands already crawling up her skirt and caressing her raven locks.
Suddenly, he produced a throaty sound that echoed through the silent alley and froze in place. The demon male had to narrow his eyes to realize what had happened. The female lifted her leg and kicked the male back, making him fall down, a bloody hole in his throat. In a matter of seconds, Mia had teared his shirt and shoved her right hand through his chest with great force, while wearing a smile on her face. When she retracted her hand, a bloody heart was squished between her fingers. Her usually grey eyes had turned crimson with excitement as she looked around her to make sure no one had seen her.
Then, Till felt a shiver run down his spine, when their gazes met. Mia stood up, holding the heart in her hand still, a blank expression now decorating her lovely features. She then lifted the heart near her mouth and never averting her eyes she took a bite, chewing nonchalantly, as if no one had been watching her. The male tightened his fists, knowing well that she could not see him clearly in the darkness and took a leap from the balcony, landing in the alley. The scent of the dead man’s blood made him hungry, but he had been trained to be able to resist it. He took a few steps to get under the street light and Mia immediately widened her eyes, dropping the heart from her hand, her bloodstained face showing nothing but shock.
‘’How? You? Till?’’, she muttered, taking a few steps back. Her body language showed weakness at that point and the male turned hesitant. His mission was to recruit her after all.
‘’It’s ok, Mia. I understand that you feel alone, hungry and confused.’’, he began, lifting his hands. ‘’I am here to give you a purpose again. You won’t have to hunt or expose yourself like this. I am a demon like you and I work for an agency. I understand this will take a while to process, but we should get out of here for now and clean you up…’’ Till had to stop talking when he saw a smirk forming on her bloodied lips. Suddenly, the woman she had known for nearly eight years burst out laughing, but not in the way she usually did when he made a joke. Her laughter sounded sinister this time.
‘’Yeah, Yeah I know about those agencies and their ties to the government. They probably want me dead, right?’’, Mia spoke cockily and crossed her arms in front of her chest. ‘’I am simply shocked that you are a demon. And to offer to recruit me too, that’s priceless.’’, she added and laughed again. Then she immediately turned serious.
‘’What’s in it for me?’’
Till frowned and considered his options. He hadn’t expected her to be that knowledgeable of her situation.
‘’Like I said you won’t have to hunt. The agency will also provide you with accommodation and payment for your services. After a few days of training with another agent you will be mainly independent.’’, the male explained and she lifted her brows, nodding to herself.
‘’To be honest with you, I like the hunting a lot…’’, she commented and then rolled her eyes, just like how she used to when he made a stupid joke. ‘’But, I could use that kind of money.’’, she added and Till felt a glimpse of hope as her words where followed by a smile. ‘’I accept.’’
