Chapter 1: Hearteaters

A shiny blade run over tender white flesh, leaving a clear wound behind it. Blood beads around the straight line and runs down the wrist of the woman, who dares not flinch anymore, since she is used to it. The crimson fluid fell in the dark waters of the pond and with every drop it vibrates, as if her vitality escaped her body, along with her blood. Her eyes turned to the silver moon, full and bright, lighting their crimson color.
‘’Hey! ‘’, a male voice was heard behind her and she didn’t even tense a muscle, as she had been able to smell the men approaching her. Four males, mercenaries, who had set up camp near the lake, had managed to find her. The woman sighed and closed her eyes for a split second, the wound on her wrist healing on its own. When her eyes opened again, the red iris glimmered and hunger was the feeling that coursed through her veins as she stood from the lake, the cool water running down her naked form. She turned around to face eight widened male eyes, staring right at her. She run her gentle fingers through her obsidian long hair and let a smile form on her plum lips.
The men glanced at one another in confusion.
‘’Are you lost girl?’’, one of them spoke and took a few careful steps down the hill, approaching the shore. The condition of their scarce armor showed the amount of money they had been able to recently make. They were hungry, tired and some of them even wounded. It only angered the woman, who had hoped to get a better fight out of them. She frowned slightly at the realization.
‘’You would be wise to leave this place. I am in no mood to fight weaklings.’’, she uttered and threw her head to the back, in an effort to physically look down on them. The males seemed even more confused.
‘’Who are you calling a weakling?’’, another one spoke from way back and only received an eyeroll from the woman, he was probably unable to see.
‘’Either you return to your little camp, or I get to have you for dinner.’’, she commented indifferently and crossed her hands in front of her exposed breasts.
‘’What the hell…’’, the one to the front murmured and took a few steps back.
‘’Hey… maybe she is that demon they had been talking about… We should go!’’, a younger one spoke and the woman smirked.
‘’We should kill her then. The church has quite a bounty on her head.’’
Swords were unsheathed and the males exchanged both frightened and determined glares with one another. The woman was now intrigued and wanted nothing but to have their hearts for dinner. She took a few steps near them, until she was out of the water.
‘’Come humans.’’, she spoke and tightened her fists. ‘’Meet your death!’’
The mercenaries charged at her, yelling, as if trying to summon the last remnants of their strength. With her next step, the woman avoided one, two, three swings aiming for her. She run between them with speed that left them dumbfounded and swung her hand towards the younger one, cupping his chin with her palm. She felt the blood course through her veins aggressively and with an abrupt movement of her arm, brought the male down, proceeding to stomp on his face with her naked foot, breaking his neck in the process.
The female turned around to face the rest of them, her iron grip finding its way around the neck of another one. It took only a second kill him, before moving to the next one. In a less than a minute, the black-haired female had four dead bodies around her feet. A smile of satisfaction decorated her pale face, as she knelt on the grassy ground, baring her sharp nails near the chest of one of them.
‘’I see you found dinner…’’, a male voice was heard behind her back, and the blood bathed woman let out a chuckle before turning to face the clothed figure, leaning against the tree. His long cloak revealed only his pale face and thin lips. Bright yellow eyes were visible as well, oddly shining.
‘’They interrupted my ceremony.’’ Her voice was gentle, but her crimson eyes expressed satisfaction and malice at the same time. ‘’Are you here for the same reason, Mido?’’
The words seemed to stir the man, as his eyes twitched and his lips pursed in annoyance. He took five slow steps near her and lowered his hood to reveal his oddly silver, silky hair, barely reaching his shoulders. The man called Mido had gentle characteristics, his beauty nearly as captivating as the woman’s. He lifted his thin eyebrows and looked down on her.
‘’You know well I do not use this name.’’, he gritted through his teeth and the woman smirked before bursting out, laughing loudly, angering Mido. She shook her hand dismissively and knelt down once more, immediately going for the chest of one of the males, piercing the flesh with her nails, as if they were sharper than a sword, tearing it apart. She dug through the bloody opening to get to the heart, all the while smiling ironically.
‘’It’s a shame that you choose to hide who you are. You deny your hunger, as if that could change your nature.’’, she spoke softly, her voice contradicting with her abrupt movements. When she pulled her hand out, a heart was nestled in her palm. She lifted her gaze to meet the male’s emerald eyes. ‘’As for me…I have always been Ketsu and I’ll never stop being true to myself till the day I die.’’
‘’If you keep going like that that day might come soon enough. Humans have been turning against us for some time now.’’, the male replied and worry showed on his face, turning a few wrinkles visible. Ketsu chuckled and sank her, sharper than usual, teeth in the heart while standing up. She took a bite and chewed on the warm, raw flesh, the blood staining her lips, chin and torso. Mido swallowed hard, his adam’s apple bobbing and the woman knew he was hungry for the meal she had taken for herself.
‘’I have been living in this country for over a century.’’, she commented and tossed the heart at the man. He caught it and frowned, licking his lips hesitantly. ‘’No human has been able to beat me.’’
The silver haired male brought the heart near his mouth and showed sharp teeth before taking a huge bite, chewing hungrily, as if he hadn’t eaten anything for days. His reaction earned him a smile from the woman, who proceeded to open the rest of the human males, pulling out their hearts. She threw a second one to the silver haired man and ate the other two herself.
For a few minutes nothing but the sound of aggressive chewing was heard, as the two otherworldly creatures stared down at the bodies, while eating their hearts. After they were done, they both approached the lake to wash the blood off. Mido took a white handkerchief out of a pocket of his brown leather vest and wiped his hands and face.
‘’I will be moving to Tereen tonight.’’, the woman commented and turned her head to approach one of the trees near the lake, where she had carefully hidden her possessions. Her mind had already been concerned with her plans.
‘’You are one crazy woman Ketsu.’’ Mido commented, his yellow eyes staring at her as she wore her pants and white button up shirt, proceeding to cover up with leather enhancements. Her final pieces of clothing where a backpack and a long, black cloak, similar to the male. ‘’Tereen is packed with hunters now, you know.’’
‘’These boys that take up demon hunting are nothing but sons of poor people, trying to make a life of their own.’’, Ketsu scoffed and lifted her hood to hide her face, making her crimson eyes and plum lips, her only visible characteristics.
‘’See ya Mido. ‘’, she added and began pacing away, leaving the male behind her. ‘’Have fun being a coward.’’ The female couldn’t see him, but imagined the twist of his lips at the sound of her words. Mido was a proud man, but had fallen from glory, when his hometown revolted and overthrew the nobility, making his life a bit tougher, since he was affiliated with it.
The world was changing again, Ketsu could sense it in her ashy and tired bones, but she was up for it. She had lived far too many years to fear for her life. Being a demon was nothing but a gift and curse for her and it only made her want to live on a blade’s edge. Her walk to Tereen was quiet and it gave her time to recalculate her moves. Being a demon gave her advantages against every other human, even those who were knights and warriors. The only issue with beings like her was the fact that had to eat a very particular diet: humans. It was the only thing that could nourish their bodies and strengthen them. Should they choose to eat a normal diet, their powers diminish and they end up living less that the average human being, maybe twenty years at best.
The moon fell and rose again, before she had reached the city of Tereen, a well-guarded place where merchants came and went easily. The sudden cooperation of human nobility with the church had gradually led to the fall of demons from power all around the country and many of them chose to flee to other counties where demon nobility stood strong. It did not phase Ketsu, since she never cared for power. Her only desire was blood and knowledge. The woman had a very particular kink and it was science, the only reason she kept feeding her rotten body.
Before she entered the main streets of the town, two guards she hadn’t seen before stopped her, smug expressions on their faces. Ketsu remained calm and showed no signs of her cocky attitude, knowing well by now how the world worked.
‘’New in Tereen?’’, the taller one asked, scratching on his grey beard indifferently, while eyeing the exposed skin under her neck. The black-haired woman brought her hood back a bit, revealing her face.
‘’No, but I guess you are.’’, she spoke and pursed her lips. The men glanced at one another.
‘’What is your purpose here?’’ the other one asked, a chestnut eyed younger male, with a genuine stance.
‘’I actually live in Failands, in the second village, but I visit Tereen every month to get some resources for my herb garden. The merchant cart that brought me is already in there. I had to pick some wildflowers in the area first.’’, she spoke, trying to show annoyance for being held back from entering the town. She switched the story every now and then, but seeing how these guards did not even know her, she choose to use a story she had used before. Tereen was the city of choice for her these last years.
‘’Oh…’’, the elder guard uttered and took a step aside. ‘’Please come in. Richard’s inn has a few free beds tonight, I was told. Enjoy your business in Tereen.’’, he added and the woman covered her head again and nodded to them, before stepping on the paved paths of the town.
