The importance of music

(A relaxing and emotional ost)

(An ost fit for battles)

Music is a big deal for me, as it is for most people. It has been passed on to me by my father, who used to have a radio station in his teenage years. A true rocker through and through (with the occasional rebetiko love, my favourite type of Greek music), my father used Scorpions as lullabies for both me and my brother. So it is expected for me to love rock and eventually metal. Being a very emotional (quote term, angsty) teen, also got me into a very emotional, dark style of music and loving fantasy got me into epic music, anime and game soundtracks.
Music can built the worlds and scenarios you use in your stories. For me, my greatest plot twists and details came up while listening to soundtracks, imagining various scenes again and again down to their last detail. You listen to a depressing song and you imagine an emotional scene, you listen to an epic song and you can’t help but imagine your characters fight to the death. Some types of music, specifically instrumental (the majority of ost) are relaxing and offer a lovely background noise for you to work over. It’s not always a desire of mine to have background music when I write, since it can often be distracting, but it usually pumps me up for certain scenes.
Music isn’t an important tool just for the creator, it is also an important tool for the consumer aka reader or viewer. Can you even imagine some of your favourite scenes in movies or shows withought their characteristic soundtracks? For example in Game of Thrones when Drogon arrives to tear down the Lannister army, or in Death Note when L appears for the first time and tricks Light? Can you even imagine the Godfather and not replay the soundtrack in your head? Think about Kill Bill and try not to whistle the famous tune the ‘’nurse’’ whistles? Music speaks to our minds in ways we cannot even actively comprehend at times. It can bring forth emotions we hide deep inside us. It can drive us to cry, scream and sing with all the passion in our hearts. It can make us shiver in excitement or fear. It can built or break emotions and that is the very reason it is an important tool for creators.
